Kōtare | Kingfisher

Kōtare, the sacred kingfisher, is a native bird of coasts, waterways and open country, often hunting from a conspicuous perch. Its English name tells only part of the story: small crabs can dominate its diet on estuarine mudflats, while inland birds also hunt insects and other land-based prey. Some move from inland breeding areas towards the coast for winter.

Turquoise and blue feathers brighten the kingfisher’s back, set against warm cream and a long, dark bill. A rugged ink-painted perch grounds its compact shape. The strong horizontal line of the bill gives the otherwise loose composition a clear sense of direction and alertness.

Printed on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper, with a smooth, non-glossy finish.

Pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks reproduce the colours and fine details of the original digital artwork. Each giclée print is produced in New Zealand.
