Kōtare | Kingfisher

Perched against a clean white backdrop, Kōtare | Kingfisher is a native bird greeting card from Hiriwā Digital Art’s Inked collection. Brilliant turquoise, teal and blue tones sweep through the kōtare’s head, wings and tail, contrasted by warm russet and cream across the breast and its long, distinctive dark bill. A rugged branch rendered in expressive black brushwork, surrounded by loose colour washes and scattered ink splashes, gives the composition its bold contemporary character.

Kōtare are native kingfishers found throughout Aotearoa New Zealand in an unusually wide range of environments, from estuaries and rocky coastlines to rivers, lakes, farmland and forest margins. Their diet is equally varied, including small fish and crabs as well as insects, lizards and other small prey. Rather than building an exposed nest, they breed in cavities excavated into banks, cliffs or trees.

These greeting cards are fine art prints in card form, using the same 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper as Hiriwā’s larger prints.
