Frequently Asked Questions
Iris photography uses specialised macro photography to capture the incredible detail, colour, and patterns within your iris. Your image is then carefully edited to create a striking portrait that is completely unique to you.
You'll sit on a stool with your head supported in an optometrist's chin rest while I photograph your eye at close range. The process is quick and straightforward, and I'll guide you through exactly where to look and what to do.
Not at all. Nothing touches your eye during the photography process. You'll simply look towards the camera while your iris is photographed.
The photography itself only takes a few minutes. Please allow for a 5-minute photography session per eye.
Absolutely. As long as they're able to sit still and follow a few simple instructions, children can have their iris photographed too.
Yes, feel free to leave your contact lenses in during your session.
Glasses are removed for the photograph so they won't affect your iris portrait.
Your Iris & Its Colour
Usually, yes! Brown eyes often reveal an incredible amount of texture, pattern, and colour under macro photography, including gold, amber, copper and darker chocolate tones that aren't obvious to the naked eye.
Blue eyes don't actually contain blue pigment. Their colour is created by the way light scatters through the structure of the iris, which means they can appear much more silver, grey or pale in detailed macro photography. Your finished portrait is carefully edited to bring out the natural colour and detail present in your eye while still keeping it recognisably yours.
No. The intricate patterns within your iris are highly individual, which is what makes iris photography so fascinating and personal.
This is entirely up to you! You can choose to have one eye photographed or multiple eyes. Every iris is different, even your own left and right eyes, so photographing both can be surprisingly interesting.
Editing & Portraits
I enhance contrast, colour, and detail so that the structure of your iris can really shine, but I don't simply replace your natural eye colour with something else. If you have a particular preference for how vibrant or natural you'd like the finished image to appear, just let me know.
No. Reflections, eyelashes, and surrounding eye areas are carefully removed during editing so that the finished artwork focuses entirely on your iris.
Yes. Two or more iris portraits can be combined into a single portrait, making it a lovely option for couples, family members, or friends.
