Perched with its distinctive tail spread wide, Pīwakawaka | Fantail is a native bird art print from Hiriwā Digital Art’s Inked collection. Warm russet tones flow through the back and tail, contrasted by crisp black, white and soft cream markings across the head and body. A twisting branch rendered in bold black brushwork, surrounded by loose washes and scattered ink splashes, adds movement to the composition and echoes the lively character of the pīwakawaka.
Endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand, pīwakawaka are energetic insect hunters known for their agile, seemingly erratic flight. Their broad fan-shaped tails help them change direction rapidly as they pursue insects through the air, and they will often follow people and animals through the bush to catch small insects disturbed by their movement.
Designed and printed in Aotearoa New Zealand, Pīwakawaka | Fantail is available as a physical fine art print in sizes A4, A3, A2, A1 and A0. Each print is produced using pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper. Every print sold also funds the planting of at least one native tree in Aotearoa.
