Perched against a clean white backdrop, Ruru | Morepork is a native bird art print from Hiriwā Digital Art’s Inked collection. Large golden-yellow eyes command attention against richly mottled brown, cream and charcoal plumage, while the owl rests on a bare branch rendered in expressive black brushwork. Loose ink strokes and scattered splashes frame the bird, giving the composition a bold contemporary character while retaining the ruru’s distinctive watchful presence.
Ruru hold a particularly special place among Aotearoa New Zealand’s wildlife as the country’s only surviving native owl. Although ruru themselves are currently classified as Not Threatened, they are the sole remaining native representative of a group that once included the now-extinct laughing owl, or whēkau. Today, their distinctive call can still be heard in forests throughout much of mainland New Zealand and on offshore islands.
Designed and printed in Aotearoa New Zealand, Ruru | Morepork is available as a physical fine art print in sizes A4, A3, A2, A1 and A0. Each print is produced using pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper. Every print sold also funds the planting of at least one native tree in Aotearoa.
