Perched with an alert, commanding presence, Kāhu | Harrier Hawk is a native bird art print from Hiriwā Digital Art’s Inked collection. Rich layers of brown, russet, cream and charcoal define the bird’s patterned plumage, while its intense golden eye, hooked beak and powerful yellow talons reinforce the character of this striking bird of prey. A rugged branch rendered in bold black brushwork, surrounded by loose washes and scattered ink splashes, gives the composition its expressive contemporary style.
Also known as the swamp harrier or Australasian harrier, kāhu are native birds of prey found throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. They arrived here naturally around 1,000 years ago and have adapted particularly well to open country, wetlands and farmland. Kāhu are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, often seen soaring with their long wings held in a shallow V as they search the ground below for prey or carrion.
