Pīwakawaka | Fantail

Endemic to New Zealand, the pīwakawaka is a small insect hunter recognised by its fanned tail and quick, twisting flight. It weaves moss, fine fibres and cobwebs into a compact cup-shaped nest, often with a little tail of material beneath it. Both parents care for the young, and the male can tend the fledglings while the female starts another nest, allowing the pair to raise successive broods in a productive season.

Russet tail feathers spread above an ink-painted branch, their warm colour balanced by charcoal and cream around the face. The open fan creates movement even in a perched pose. Loose marks around the bird echo its restless energy while keeping the delicate feather patterns distinct.

Printed on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper, with a smooth, non-glossy finish.

Pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks reproduce the colours and fine details of the original digital artwork. Each giclée print is produced in New Zealand.
