Kiwi

Kiwi are flightless birds endemic to New Zealand, adapted to searching for food beneath the forest floor. Their long bills offer more than a keen sense of smell: sensory pits near the tip detect vibrations from hidden prey. This lets a kiwi locate small invertebrates underground before touching them, using a specialised sense also found in some distantly related shorebirds.

Earthy brown feathers follow the kiwi’s rounded body as its long bill points towards the ground. Loose washes and scattered ink marks give the stance a sense of purpose. The contrast between shaggy plumage and the fine line of the bill brings out the bird’s unusual proportions.

Printed on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper, with a smooth, non-glossy finish.

Pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks reproduce the colours and fine details of the original digital artwork. Each giclée print is produced in New Zealand.
