Pūtangitangi | Paradise Duck

Pūtangitangi, the paradise shelduck, is endemic to New Zealand, with a white-headed female and dark-headed male. Despite often grazing in paddocks, they can nest in tree holes up to 20 metres high. Both parents guard the ducklings, sometimes feigning a broken wing to draw danger away. In summer, birds gather at communal sites to replace all their wing feathers, temporarily losing flight during the moult.

Two birds stand together above lively ink washes, their dark and white heads setting each individual apart. Chestnut body feathers bring warmth to the pairing, while black marks beneath their feet give the composition a shared base. The closely placed forms make the relationship between the birds part of the portrait.

Printed on 230gsm smooth matte archival-quality paper, with a smooth, non-glossy finish.

Pigment-based, UV-stable archival inks reproduce the colours and fine details of the original digital artwork. Each giclée print is produced in New Zealand.
