About the Artwork
Kakīānau, the black swan, is a plant-eating waterbird whose long neck helps it reach submerged vegetation. Despite its size and powerful wings, it becomes temporarily flightless when replacing its wing feathers. Large groups gather at selected New Zealand estuaries for this annual moult, using saltwater habitats as seasonal refuges even though they breed on fresh water.
The long curve of the neck gives this Black & White portrait its strong, uncluttered shape. Fine changes in feather tone soften the darker plumage, while light and shadow define the bird’s profile. The restrained treatment makes the swan’s posture and elegant proportions the focus.
Canvas & Construction
Printed in New Zealand on 360gsm premium natural white matte cotton canvas. The canvas is acid-free and OBA-free, with a neutral-pH coating designed for water-based inks.
The canvas is stretched over kiln-dried New Zealand pine stretcher bars, giving the artwork depth and a finished shape for your wall.
Size & Edge Finishes
Available in A4 (21 × 29.7cm), A3 (29.7 × 42cm), A2 (42 × 59.4cm), A1 (59.4 × 84.1cm) and A0 (84.1 × 118.8cm). The artwork’s orientation determines which side is the width.
- Mirror Edge: the edge of the image is reflected around the sides.
- Black: the sides are finished in black.
- None (Blank): the sides are left blank.
Your edge choice changes the sides of the canvas, allowing you to choose the finish that suits your space.
Caring for Your Canvas
Display indoors, away from direct sunlight, damp areas and sources of heat. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid water, cleaning sprays or pressure on the printed surface.
Lift by the stretcher frame, taking care not to press or stretch the canvas.
Planting Native Trees
Every canvas print funds a native tree through Trees That Count. Your planting-region selection is a preference; the final location depends on where support is needed.
Hiriwā also makes monthly contributions to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, supporting native forest and wildlife conservation.
