Although native bees collect and store nectar, they do not produce honey in commercial quantities. Honey bees were introduced in 1839 for this purpose, and the number of wild colonies multiplied rapidly. By the 1860s, bee nests in the bush were plentiful and Māori became the country’s first commercial beekeepers.
