New Zealand has roughly 200 fern species, 40% of which occur nowhere else in the world. The ponga (silver fern) is the most iconic of these, having become one of our most recognised symbols at home and abroad. The distinctive silver colouration for which they are named make ponga useful for marking tracks when night walking by laying fronds silver-side up.
