The pīwakawaka (fantail) is a small, friendly bird of the bush and domestic gardens. Its distinctive fan-shaped tail allows it to maneuver energetically whilst hunting for insects. Although its lifespan is short with the oldest bird recorded only three years of age, the fantail survives through prolific and early breeding, usually raising two or more broods per season.
