The akatawhiwhi (rātā vine) is a native climbing vine with bright scarlet to orange flowers in autumn and winter that rise above the forest canopy. Unlike the northern rātā, the climbing rātā does not strangle host trees. When mature, the stems hang free from host trees like thick twisted ropes. The flower nectar is a favoured food for tūī, korimako (bellbirds), and kākā.
