The kakīānau (black swan) is a large waterbird with black plumage, white flight feathers, and a crimson bill. It was deliberately introduced from Australia in the 1860s as an ornamental waterfowl, however, black swans have also naturally flown to New Zealand, leading scientists to consider them a native rather than exotic species.
